The InterAcademy Panel (IAP) and Die Junge Akademie (German Young Scientist Academy) is organising a workshop for the formation of the Global Young Scientists Academy in Berlin, Germany between 14-17, February, 2010. Four young Nigerian Scientists selected by peer review process has been invited to represent Nigeria at this workshop. The workshop will also discuss formation of national young science  academies in countries where such does not exist, such as the proposed Nigerian Academy of Young Scientists. To equip the Nigerian contigent to the workshop with a well formulated position paper, young scientists like you are encouraged to make suggestions through this forum.

Your comments should address issues such as; who should form membership of the academy; What is the age limit of members; who should fund the academy; Should members pay dues or not; Should the academy be govt owned or NGO, and other relevant topics.

Your ideas and suggestions will also form part of the position paper to be presented before the Nigerian Academy of Science for the proposed Nigerian Young Scientists Conference.

Comments will be taken till 10th Februray 2010. Thank you for your anticipated suggestion.

Idowu Ola
NICOYS Coordinator.

The overall basis of this event sounds really good. I am interested in how this kind of movement can benefit Nig. science. On the formation of GYSA local sections, it requires lots of consultation and brain-storming. It is hard to certainly say this and this without critical analysis of the scope of such movement. However, since the national section is a spill-over of GYSA, I think requirements for membership should take up GYSA benchmark, not to say further compelling requirements are unconsiderable. My experience about research organizations, especially for one in Nigeria, suggests that non-govt establishment will be a better route. Of course there're other issues that cannot be conclusively addressed at the onset of the organization, most of these, I belief, are subject to future referenda.
